Marlene Magrino

Marlene Magrino is a Director of School Partnerships with Insight Education Group. A resident of Washington, DC, she joined Insight to facilitate the implementation of SDSA as part of a full service school pilot program for the District of Columbia Public Schools. With all prior educational experience in public charter and private schools in Washington, DC, she is excited to join the much-needed initiatives in DCPS. She believes this initiative will have a positive impact of wide scope on the academic achievement of the children in the city she loves.

Most recently, Marlene held the Assistant Principal position at DC Preparatory Academy, a charter school in the Edgewood neighborhood in northeast DC. As the AP, Marlene oversaw all aspects of the 4th and 5th grades, which comprised the Junior Academy. Specific projects included researching and leading the development of a school-wide character education curriculum and behavior management structure and creating a literacy-based school environment which included organizing the training and implementation of the Qualitative Reading Inventory as a school-wide assessment tool, the Direct Instruction intervention program, and the Readers Workshop model across all grade levels. She also coached the Science and Social Studies content teachers to implement reading strategies and integrate ELA curriculum across the content areas. Marlene is a certified instructional observer with the Teacher Advancement Program.

Marlene began her professional work with children as a counselor and teacher at a residential therapeutic wilderness camp with Eckerd Youth Alternatives. Over 2 years, she also served as a Senior then Master Counselor and led 2-week training sessions for incoming counselors in the region. Having discovered a passion for educating youth, Marlene entered into the charter school system teaching at YES College Prep in Houston, TX. After returning to Washington, DC, she joined the staff as a teacher at The Washington Middle School for Girls, a small private school in the Anacostia neighborhood in southeast DC. As the school expanded, Marlene received the opportunity to lead the development and implementation of a 4th and 5th grade campus for this school. The experience solidified her desire to pursue school administration. The following year, Marlene enthusiastically accepted a fellowship with New Leaders for New Schools where she received training from highly distinguished educational leaders in the field. This fellowship led to a year of residency at DC Prep, where she stayed on as AP the following year.

Marlene earned a B.A. in International Studies from American University in Washington, DC and an M.S.A in Educational Administration from Trinity University.
